The 2026 Subaru Crosstrek Sport Hybrid debuts a new trim and powertrain. The compact crossover features the carmaker’s next-generation hybrid system, a naturally aspirated boxer engine and symmetrical all-wheel drive.

It’s a classic two-box, two-row, rear-hatch design. It sits high, projecting a rugged stance while retaining daily utility and livability.

Refreshed in 2024, the Crosstrek is now in its third generation. 2026 models include a new front fascia, new grille, updated headlights, an elevated ride height and more aggressive body cladding.  

First Impression

The Crosstrek projects a rugged, exterior go-anywhere look. It features crisp proportions and a dynamic, athletic design and appeals to its target demographic.

Under the Hood

The Crosstrek uses a 2.5-liter normally aspirated boxer engine and a series-parallel hybrid, producing 194 horsepower through a Lineartronic continuously variable transmission (CVT).

On the Road

The hybrid accelerates smartly with precise throttle and feels agile in city traffic.

On the highway, the Crosstrek is competent and comfortable, with adequate power. Top-end performance drops off, requiring advance planning to pass.

The Crosstrek inspires confidence with a smooth ride and a planted all-wheel-drive feel, most noticeable on rough roads.

On twisty roads, the Crosstrek’s body rolls and understeers. On unpaved ones, it feels playful yet secure.

Interior & Comfort

The crossover delivers on comfort. The front row offers more space than a full-sized Chevrolet Silverado. Headroom, legroom, knee room and shoulder room impress, with a natural driving position and excellent visibility for my 6-foot-3 frame.

The back seat is tight but adults fit without requiring acrobatics.

Ingress and egress are easy and with little knee bend.

Cargo space is practical, with a wide hatch and 18.6 cubic feet behind the seats, expanding to 54 cubic feet with seats folded.

The Sport Hybrid comes standard with a power moonroof.

Electronics

Subaru’s STARLINK Multimedia System offers an intuitive, responsive 11.6-inch vertical display. Menus are straightforward. The stereo delivers balanced sound without boominess.

Navigation and wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto come standard. Additional presets would enhance usability.

Subaru’s driver-assistance features keep improving. EyeSight is smoother with fewer false alarms. Adaptive cruise control and lane centering are more predictable and less obtrusive.

Economy & Pricing

Gas mileage is an EPA-estimated 36 miles per gallon in city driving, 36 mpg on the highway.

I matched the number in mixed driving, a competitive tally for an all-wheel-drive SUV.

The Subaru Crosstrek Sport Hybrid has a base MSRP of $33,995. On my evaluation vehicle, all features were standard, making the as-tested MSRP $35,415, including destination.  

The Verdict

The Crosstrek Sport Hybrid offers confidence, efficiency and everyday usability in a package that feels playful and well-planted.

It’s comfortable, capable, economical and an excellent daily driver. It’s ready for fire trails, weekend camping or mountain trips wherever there’s fresh powder.
